|
|
searched and searched, but could not find anything on this subject.
ive got a malibu pro 2 tandem, and a couple of the deck loops need to be replaced. theyve either cracked in half, or broken off, leaving the mounting points with rivets still attached.
my question is, how do you remove the rivets without stressing or distorting the plastic? im planning on replacing pretty much all of the loops, just for the hell of it.
are there special tools?
on a side note, anyone have the same yak and mount a crate on the back??? ive seen it in the front/middle, when riding solo, but not on the back.
thanks |

Drill em out. Try not to make the hole any bigger. I know that sounds hard to do but start with a small drill bit. Also if you can remove the plastic from around the rivets before you try to remove them it will help.
You can get all the replacement parts from Andy at OEX in sunset or maybe even Jason from this site.

x2 on the drilling.
I had a crate on the back of my Pro2. Just need to find something the right size, then use turnbuckles to mount it.
I dont have a good pic, but I think you can make enough out in these.

| If the holes end up bigger....they did for me...just use bolts, washers, and locknuts. (This of course is assuming you can reach the area from the inside). Otherwise, you just need to use bigger rivets, or screws of some sort. |

thanks for the replies
gotta try to get those suckers out hopefully this weekend.
additional question
if im using aircraft rivets to secure the new deck loops, is there a rivet gun i need to get?
for spaces that i have no internal access, would an aircraft rivet be best or wellnuts? |

3/16" drill bit is what I believe will do the job.
If you've got a dremel you could also grind down the top of the rivet then chisel the head off.
Yes you'll need a rivet gun, can be had for $10-20, and you'll need somewhat specific rivets. You can get them from Hook1.
I'd stay away from wellnuts just because of the big hole needed to use them. |
