The Annual Kayak Sportfishing Tournament is coming to Dana Point, CA this March 11th, 2006. This proven tournament has drawn 150 entrants in consecutive years.
Dana Point, CA is not only a beautiful stretch of coastline, it is an ideal location for a kayak fishing tournament. The productive waters just offshore offer good bass and halibut fishing, and as we discovered at our last event, are also home to 55+lb white seabass. The previous year our bass division winner caught, weighed and released an 11+lb calico bass.
Dana Point is situated in Orange County directly between San Diego and Los Angeles, two large and significant kayak fishing markets. The tournament draws kayak anglers and their families from several of the adjacent inland counties and farther abroad. A small but growing percentage of competitors attend from as far north as the San Francisco Bay Area. An ever increasing percentage of entrants and their families have been turning the one day event into an extended vacation, attracted by convenient overnight lodgings and one of the highest rated state park campgrounds in California, Doheny State Beach.
The event is a tremendous value for kayak anglers as we do our best to run it at cost. For $30 (if registered before Monday March 6th, $40 if you register on event day) kayak anglers receive a tournament entry, event shirt, mesquite barbeque, giveaway bag with various lures and a raffle ticket.
How the Tournament Works
This dual-division event encompasses two distinctly different styles of fishing, Catch and Release Bass and Big Fish. Kayak anglers may only enter one division.
Catch & Release Bass Division
Competitive kayak bass fishing has been on the rise as many kayak anglers routinely take to the bays, harbors and coastal kelp beds in search of some of the best saltwater bass fishing on the West Coast. Dana Point is certainly no exception as Timothy Torchia found out at our 1st Annual Event, catching, weighing and releasing an 11lb 4oz calico bass which tipped the overall bass total in his favor to beat out over 70 other bass division entrants for 1st Place. Anglers in the bass division are restricted to using only artificial baits and lures.
Big Fish Division
The other half of the event is dedicated to the Big Fish Division which has certainly been no stranger to large game fish. Last year’s Big Fish winner took 1st Place with an impressive 55lb 7oz white seabass. To further respect and advocate for catch and release bass fishing, calico and spotted bass are not eligible in the Big Fish Division. Kayak anglers in this division typically target halibut, yellowtail and white seabass as these game fish can grow to over 50lbs.
Why not make a weekend or even an entire week out of it?
Dana Point, CA is a not only an ideal location for a fishing getaway but also serves as an ideal staging base for visiting many of the other attractions Southern California has to offer. It's proximity to Sea World, Legoland, Disneyland, Universal Studios, Venice, Baja as well as many other beaches and attractions makes it an ideal place to bring both the family and friends. Besides the attractions, fishing can be pretty darn good around this time of year.

The campground is going to be packed with kayak anglers and their families and friends. Each year the campsite seems to get booked ealier than the previous. I'm sure it will be booked by Feb if it's not already.

Hi Jas,
I just got a camp site and am looking forward to the tourney. Never done it before but it sounds like a blast - I'll try the big fish division. Is there some other link to sign up?
Thanks,
Arne |

I'm definitely in this year. Wish I could camp but I'm putting in a 12hr shift at work before heading down in the AM....then back home to get as much sleep as I can before doing the LA Marathon.
This year they moved the Marathon up a week from the traditional first Sunday in March....last year I was still too beat up the week after the race to even think of participating in the tournament(dont want to be on the water with legs that dont work.) |

BEARLYTHERE, thanks for the invite. I don't know when I'll get up there yet.
Good chance it'll be after dark, but hopefully not. If the surf is real small you can launch straight out of the campground . If it's a beach break going on, wheel up the beach next to the jetty for a big reduction in surf. If the jetty looks too rough, drive to Baby/Mothers beach 2 minutes away at the North end of Dana harbor.
I'm just telling you this so I can call you for an on the water report If they're not crawling , I'll probably opt to nurse a 12pk. See you there either way. _________________ Thanks,

I live on the hill looking down on the beach so I can party and then walk back up.
Can you park and launch at baby beach and then paddle to doheny?
what kind of live well is everyone using for the bass tournament? |

is culling allowed?
say you catch 10 bass and then catch a big one.
can you continue to weigh and then just omit the weight of the smallest one?

-You can only submit 10 bass total for weighin throughout the day. We only count your heaviest 5.
-As far as what bait tank everyone is using, it's quite a variety. The kind of tank to not use would be one with an aerator system. If you don't have a bait tank I recommend a floating fish basket. The larger ones go for around $20.
I'd prefer it if you didn't paddle from Baby Beach to Doheny to sign in. We don't want anyone on the water prior to signing in.

thanks for your quick reply guys.
This will be my first ever Kayak tourney since I've only been at it since October.
I was a bit worried about the size of my bait tank (ha ha, that sounds funny). If you guys think that would do (picture above) then I'm stoked.
Since starting kayaking in October I've enjoyed catching lots of bass, buts, and even a yellowtail. Lobster fishing has been the best season for me ever.
I'm very pleased and satisfied with this new sport I've joined.
