I live in Fairfax. I don't know how active this board is, since I see you posted in January, and had no replies.

I'm new to freshwater fishing in Northern Virginia. I'd lived here for years, and never opened my eyes to the possibilities.

I now hit Burke Lake a lot, and was just out at FountainHead this past weekend. I was disappointed that Lake Manassas closed. There are many places to go, more if you have your own kayak or other boat.

I'd love to hear if you're still reading this board. I'm looking for someone to talk to in this general area as well.

The VDGIF website has a listing of all the public lakes and reservoirs they manage. I've been working my way down the list to explore them.

So far, I'm mostly bank fishing, but I rent a kayak when I can. If I can convince my wife, I'll buy one.

Find your way to the Potomac River, Occoquan River or one of the many creeks or bays off the Potomac (Quantico, Gunston, Belmont). You can get into some big bass. There are multiple reservoirs on the Quantico Marine Corps Base. You can get on the base with a driver's license. You need a VA and a Base fishing license. You can buy a base license at the Lunga Reservoir. They also rent kayaks and john boats at Lunga. You should also consider traveling to Fredericksburg and launching on the Rappahanock or visiting Motts Run Reservoir or Ni Reservoir.

Hope to see you out there!

TDK,
I have fished Gunston Cove a few times, some nice bass and thousands of cats at night. Thanks for the info I will start doing my homework.

I'm a newbie to Kayak Fishing, and live near Quantico. I've fished from my yak at the private lake I live on, Montclair, and also at Chopawamsic Creek
on Quantico. I'd love to hit some new water, and and meet some locale anglers. I know it's getting to be close to the end of the season, but I'm game.

Hi Phil,

There are lots of good choices around Quantico. I live right next to Montclair. I have fished Chopawamsic, but that wasn't very fruitful. The best fishing I've experienced has been on Quantico Creek. My brother and I launch our Hobie Pro Anglers from the boat ramp at the mouth of the creek. You access the ramp by going into Q town and then turning left at the Quantico Marina. Follow the signs to the boat ramp (you have to go through a gate into part of the base complex, but it's open to the public). We also go to the back of the base and fish the three reservoirs -- Lunga, Smith and Breckenridge. Smith and Breckenridge are beautiful, lightly used water. Fishing on the base requires a base license as well as a Virginia license. You can purchase a base permit at Lunga or the base exchange near Chopawamsic. It's only $10 for the year.

Happy to link up next time we go out. Maybe this weekend.

I'm definitely up for this weekend. My wife is in the Army, and I work
on Quantico, and have a Quantico license, so access is no problem. I've rented a Jon boat at Lunga, but didn't have much luck. I've only fished Smith from shore, and have yet to make it to the main reservoir of Breckenridge. I've fished from shore at the Hospital Point landing, and would love to kayak fish it. Let me know when you have some free time.

Heck, you know the place better than we do. We regularly launch from Hospital Point onto Quantico Creek. I've caught a lot of fish in the creek. We were out there this weekend. The weeds really pulled back over the last two weeks, so the fish were tough to locate. They seem to be hanging around the bits of remaining grass along the main creek channel. We occasionally go out around the front of the base and have gone down as far as Chopawamsic Island. Lunga is subject to heavy fishing, so it can be tough. We've caught good fish in Breckenridge and Smith. They are both very deep in spots and the fish can be tough to locate. The scenery and wildlife you can see are a good part of the reason to go to these spots.

We also like to launch on the Occoquan River from Belmont Bay. There's a little gravel parking lot in front of the golf club where we park and then you walk down the path to the fence for the wildlife refuge. There's a small bit of beach there that is good for launching a kayak. We can hit Belmont Bay, Occoquan Bay and the Occoquan River from there.

At some ppoint in the near future we intend to launch on the Rappahanock down at Fredericksburg.

Sweet! I've had pretty good luck at Chopawamsic using Zoom Hornie Toads over the lilly pads, and Flukes as well. I'd love to hit the Rappahanock. I here that everything from Smallmouth to Largemouth and stripers can be found there, depending where you fish. I just bought a Ocean Kayak Prowler Trident 13, and have yet to get it on the water. I can't wait to get out there!
