This month started out with some very big swells from distant winter storms. The big swells boiled the shoreline lava rocks out as deep as 25-feet where we caught many a chunky calico on light line, small lures and the okuma saltwater spinner the Salina.
A good run of winter yellowtail from 20-40 pounds have been around this month too. Mine took an iron in mid-column that I’d made a long cast to diving pelicans and busting bait. The Baidarka Floating Kayak Rod makes 50-yard iron casts possible for the seated kayaker because of its short reargrip & soft tip. Okuma’s Solterra SLR-10CS reel with 42” of line retrieve was the 1-2-punch for the fish above.
The rockfishing season came to an end this month but not without us catching our fair share. For these shallow water rockfish and for many other inshore sport fish including bass, barracuda & schoolie size yellowtails we prefer Catalina Inshore Rods with either the Contoura or Clarion magnetic cast control equipped reels.
We want to end this year’s final fishing report with thanks to all of you who make the Kayak Sportfishing.com the truly great resource it is.
