In my younger days I did a bunch of free diving; shot yellow tail and barracuda (along with a variety of fish) off of paradise cove, topanga, county line...

Back then there were tow primary users of kayaks, divers, and free divers. I'd recommend hooking up with free divers and going that route. There are a bunch of tricks to learn that could simply take a life time without some mentoring, needless to say safety concerns.
